'' Before, I could get up and stand, but with a lot of support. Now I can walk a bit with a walker. My way of living is quite easier now. I was convinced that I needed to be here to improve my condition so it was not a big decision to come here. I will come here as long as I can. My overall goal would be to walk, hopefully unassisted. I would highly recommend the First Steps program. It is very beneficial to your health and overall well-being. '' - Layne McDonald, diagnosed as having an incomplete spinal cord injury, C5-C6. He can now get up, stand unassisted, and walk with a walker. |

'' Now, I can feed myself which is huge for me. '' - Jayci Wittmier, diagnosed as having a complete spinal cord injury, C4-C5, from no movement in her right arm and very limited movement in her left arm to be able to feed herself, use a manual wheelchair and kick a ball with her leg. '' I know where Jayci would be if she hadn’t followed the First Steps program. She would only have movement in the neck and shoulder. She would have sat in a chair 24/7. She came a long way in five years in the program and she still works hard to get better and she is still progressing. It worths it coming to First Steps even though it takes her several hours of travel. At home, she first couldn't sit on her own. It took two people to dress her. Now she can sit on her own and she can feed herself, which is huge for everybody. '' - Jayci's father |
'' Do I walk now? No, but the improvement in my quality of life is incomparable with the beginning. If I had to do it again in order to regain both my arms functions, I would start it again even if I had to pay 1M$. There is no price for what I have gained. '' - Chris Lesanko, the founder of FSWC Regina, from very limited left arm movements to regain both arms function, reduced from 24 hours care to 6 hours care /day, reduced hospitalisation since he can cough now and fight against respiratory complications. |
'' First thing through the door, I was up, and I was out of my chair, I was in the standing frame. It was inspiring because I was doing all the things that I was told to give up. First Steps was the right place for me. The changes I saw on my body were incredible. '' - Jessica Frotten, diagnosed as having a spinal cord injury, T8-T9. She couldn't move her legs. She can walk again with long crutches and long braces. |

'' First Steps focuses on getting you out of the chair. This place can definitely change the quality of life. I have seen it at first hand with my friends who came here and I have experienced it personally. I absolutely recommend trying this program. '' - Justin Rayner, diagnosed as having a C4-C5 complete spinal cord injury. |
|
'' I think everyone should have an opportunity to work out at a place like this for recovery purposes, for maintaining overall health. Mentally and physically we all need a program like this. '' - Natasha Urkow, diagnosed as having a C4-5-6 spinal cord injury, who has moved from Edmonton, Alberta to Regina, Saskatchewan with her full-time live-in caregiver to have regular access to this program. Now she can use a manual wheelchair. |
'' If the First Steps program had existed, I would have started it right away after my injury. If you have an option, go for it. It will definitely improve you as long as you put an effort into it. You will never get a negative result. My main purpose to come here is to get some core strength, more strength overall. It really helps moving myself around day-to-day, getting out of the vehicle, making a transfer. I work full time, so I don't have time to come here as much as I want. But, however often you can come, do it. What I want to say is (whatever the purpose is, for example) in your day to day life, strength, confidence, getting out of your house, getting out moving, getting out of your chair, whatever it is, this program gives you definitely an improvement. '' -Matte Dean, diagnosed as having a complete spinal cord injury, T-4. |
